Where Is It Warm in January?

Three regions carry January. Southeast Asia is in its dry season and at its best: Phuket, Bangkok and Singapore all sit in the mid-eighties with the humidity at its lowest of the year. The Caribbean and Mexico are in the sweet spot that makes January their peak season — Cancún, the Yucatán and the islands run high seventies to low eighties with reliable sun. And the southern hemisphere is in high summer, which is why Cape Town, Rio and Sydney appear on a list of warm places in the northern winter.

The Gulf is the outlier worth knowing about. Dubai in January is around 75 °F — pleasant, walkable, and nothing like the 108 °F it hits in July. It is the one time of year the desert cities read as a beach holiday rather than an endurance test.

January is where the difference between air and water matters most, because the two answers look identical on a list. Montego Bay averages 81 °F with the sea at 82 °F. Fuerteventura, the warmest of the Canaries this month, is 65 °F with the sea at 68 °F. Both get called warm; only one is a swimming holiday.

Rainfall splits the tropics just as hard. Phuket runs 84 °F on 52 mm of rain with 320 hours of sunshine, while Flores at a similar temperature takes 421 mm. And the Red Sea is the outlier at both ends — Marsa Alam records essentially no rain at all in January.

January splits in two. The first week carries New Year pricing on almost every route, and then it falls away into the quietest stretch of the year for long-haul — the second through fourth weeks are as calm as travel gets. Warmth in January means distance, so lead time matters more than usual: book further out for Southeast Asia than for the Caribbean, and expect the Caribbean itself to be firm rather than soft, because January is its high season.

Three things move a fare more than the destination does. Book six to eight weeks ahead for short-haul and two to three months for long-haul or peak season — later than that and you are usually paying for someone else's cancellation. Fly midweek: leisure demand clusters on Friday evenings and Sunday returns, and a Tuesday departure is routinely cheaper for the same trip. And shift your dates before you shop for airlines — a day or two either side of a holiday weekend saves more than any loyalty programme. It is passport-free, which matters more in January than in any other month, because it removes the one variable a last-minute booking cannot fix. Cancún and Tulum are 82 °F at $156 from Denver and $170 from Chicago. Costa Rica is 82 °F with a 79 °F sea at $206. Jamaica is 82 °F at $252, Barbados 82 °F at $341, Punta Cana 82 °F at $372. Honolulu is 77 °F and cheapest from the west — $253 from Phoenix, $270 from Dallas and San Diego, $288 from Los Angeles.

Further out, January is Southeast Asia's best month and the numbers show it: Phuket averages 84 °F on 52 mm of rain with 320 hours of sunshine, and Bangkok and Singapore sit in the mid-eighties in their driest stretch.
