Best Caribbean Getaways from the US — 7 Islands Worth the Flight

The Caribbean is the easiest "far away" trip available to most of the US — often a shorter flight than crossing the country, with turquoise water and 80°F winters at the other end. Not every island fits every trip, though: some are built for nightlife, some for diving, one doesn't even need a passport. Here are seven worth planning a getaway around.

1. Aruba — Best for Reliable Weather

Aruba sits south of the main hurricane belt, which makes it one of the few Caribbean islands with genuinely dependable weather nearly all year. Add constant trade winds that keep the heat comfortable, powder-white Eagle Beach, and a compact size that makes renting a car worthwhile for a day exploring the desert-like Arikok National Park. Good for both a couples' trip and a family one.

2. Jamaica — Best for Variety

Jamaica packs the most range into one island: the all-inclusive resort belt around Montego Bay and Negril, Dunn's River Falls for an active day out, Blue Mountain coffee country inland, and a music and food culture that doesn't exist anywhere else in the region. It rewards leaving the resort at least once.

3. Punta Cana — Best for All-Inclusive Value

The Dominican Republic's east coast is the Caribbean's all-inclusive capital for a reason: a long stretch of beach lined with resorts covering every budget, direct flights from dozens of US cities, and package rates that are hard to match elsewhere in the region. It's the lowest-effort way to book a Caribbean week — pick a resort, and the rest is handled.

4. Puerto Rico — Best for No Passport

As a US territory, Puerto Rico needs nothing more than a driver's license to visit — no passport, no customs on the way home, and your phone plan likely just works. Old San Juan's colonial streets, the bioluminescent bay in Vieques, and El Yunque rainforest give it more to do than a pure beach island, and flights from the East Coast are often under four hours.

5. The Bahamas — Best for a Short Flight

From South Florida, Nassau is barely a 45-minute hop — closer than plenty of domestic flights. The appeal is the water itself: some of the clearest, most swimming-pool-blue sea in the hemisphere, plus easy day trips to swim with pigs at Exuma or snorkel the reefs off Nassau.

6. Curaçao — Best for Diving

Also outside the hurricane belt, Curaçao trades big beach resorts for colorful Dutch-colonial Willemstad and some of the best shore diving in the Caribbean — much of the reef is accessible straight off the rocks rather than requiring a boat trip. A quieter, more individual pick than the all-inclusive islands.

7. Barbados — Best for a Polished Trip

Barbados sits at the more refined end of the Caribbean: calm Caribbean-side beaches on the west coast, rougher Atlantic surf on the east, excellent rum and food, and an easygoing but well-run tourism infrastructure. A good pick for travelers who want the Caribbean without roughing it.

When to Go

Caribbean hurricane season runs June through November, peaking August to October — not a reason to avoid the region entirely, but worth knowing before booking late-summer travel, especially to islands directly in the belt (Puerto Rico, Punta Cana, Jamaica, the Bahamas). Aruba and Curaçao sit far enough south to largely avoid it. December through April is the reliable dry season everywhere and also the most expensive; late spring (May) and November offer a good balance of lower rates and decent odds of good weather.

Which One Should You Pick?

No passport and a short flight: Puerto Rico. Best all-inclusive value: Punta Cana. Most to do beyond the beach: Jamaica. Steadiest weather: Aruba or Curaçao. Easiest quick trip from Florida: the Bahamas. Whichever you choose, search live fares from your own airport — Caribbean routes vary enormously in price depending on which US city you're flying from.
