2.Shoulder season (May & November)
The shoulder months of May and November are, for many travellers, the smartest time to visit Cancún, offering an appealing balance of good weather, thinner crowds and gentler prices as the destination transitions between its dry and wet seasons. May sits at the tail end of the dry season and the start of the warmth building toward summer: days are hot, often around 30–32°C, mostly sunny and still relatively dry, though humidity begins to rise and the odd shower can appear later in the month, and the water is warm and inviting. 3.Wet & hurricane season (June–October)
From June to October Cancún enters its wet and hurricane season, the low season for tourism, and while it carries real caveats it also brings the year's best bargains. The weather turns hot and very humid, with highs of 31–33°C and warm, sticky nights, and rainfall increases markedly — though it's worth understanding the pattern: rain often comes as short, intense tropical downpours in the afternoon or overnight, clearing to leave plenty of sunshine, rather than all-day grey, so a beach holiday is far from washed out. The more serious consideration is that this period overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs June to November and reaches its statistical peak in September and October, the wettest and highest-risk months. Direct hurricane hits on Cancún are relatively infrequent in any given year, but the possibility of tropical storms, heavy rain and disruption is real, so travellers in these months should seriously consider comprehensive travel insurance that covers storm-related cancellations and delays, and keep an eye on forecasts. 4.Sargassum seaweed: what to know
In recent years, sargassum — a brown seaweed that drifts across the Atlantic and washes up on Caribbean shores — has become a seasonal factor for Cancún visitors worth understanding, though it's often overstated and very manageable. The seaweed arrives in variable quantities each year, generally most prevalent from around April to August (with peaks that shift annually depending on ocean conditions), when it can accumulate on beaches, discolour the shallows and, when it rots on the sand, produce an unpleasant smell. It doesn't affect the whole region equally or constantly, however, and there's a lot you can do to avoid the worst of it. 5.The best time to visit Cancún
The best time to visit Cancún depends on what you value most, but for the ideal all-round balance the shoulder months of late April to May and November are the clear winners. In these windows you get warm, largely reliable and mostly dry weather, the sea warm for swimming, noticeably lighter crowds than the peak, gentler flight and hotel prices, and — in late spring and autumn — generally less sargassum seaweed than the mid-summer peak, all without the highest-season expense.
